“Black Panther” Teaser Offers First Look at Wakanda

This past weekend fans were treated to the Black Panther teaser trailer, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that the film looks to be another home run for Marvel Studios.

For those not in the know, Black Panther/T’Challa (portrayed by Chadwick Boseman) is the king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Coogler’s Panther will take place, for the most part, outside of the United States. The story itself is said to deal with what is happening within Wakanda and what occurs when an isolationist country must interact in a global setting.

The Black Panther will also have to deal with the repercussions of his father’s death in Civil War, assuming the mantle of King and taking on those in Wakanda who feel they would be better suited for the role. So expect a little Shakespearian undertones in the film.

The cool and exciting thing about this film is that it will have a very “Afrocentric” feel to it with costume designer Ruth E. Carter taking inspiration for much of the costumes from a variety of tribes throughout Africa. So this, much like DC’s Wonder Woman, is not going to be your average superhero film.

It goes without saying that Marvel Studios have been on an impressive winning streak, dating back to the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008’s Iron Man. After the success of Wonder Woman earlier this month, the stakes are high for this film. Based on the teaser, Coogler and company have rised to the challenge.

Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Luita Nyong’o, Dani Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, John Kani and Winston Duke. It hits theaters on February 16, 2018.
