Review: Arthur

Score:C+

Director:Jason Winer

Cast:Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner

Running Time:110.00

Rated:PG-13

Heir to a limitless fortune, Arthur obnoxiously gets whatever he wants in life.  He knows nothing of reality until his inheritance is given strings complicating his life for the first time.

I fully realize that Russell Brand is a rather polarizing individual. Most either love him or hate him, but that was not the case with me. I never saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Get Him to the Greek was nothing worth discussing, and because I lean toward not-a-fan, I was even more impressed with his work in Jason Winer's Arthur.

Brand sells it. I can't tell if the character he portrayed was really close to his own personality and lifestyle or if Brand is really talented, but he was simply charming. Helen Mirren is as moving as always, and Jennifer Garner is as forgetful as usual. Greta Gerwig was just perfect in her role, and together with a cute story, I laughed throughout the film.

Of course some of the film is just plain silly, and of course some of it is predictable (even if you haven't seen the original), but this is the kind of film I go to the movies for. Maybe I have my low expectations to thank for this one, but I found this movie surprisingly entertaining. I must make the disclaimer that I am completely unfamiliar with Arthur, the original, so I am unable to make a comparison, but standing alone, this version is worth seeing again.
