Another victim of canceled film festivals, Sputnik was supposed to have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. Egor Abramenko's sci-fi thriller was based on his short film The Passenger, which premiered at Fantastic Fest (sadly also canceled this year) in 2017.
In 1983, a Soviet spacecraft crashes with only two survivors – one comatose and the other (Pyotr Fyodorov) with severe memory loss. It's up to psychologist (Oksana Akinshina) to try to get him to piece together what happened on their deadly mission. That's a little difficult with the watchful eye of state observers, and the alien creature they discover hitched a ride to Earth.
Check out the trailer below, which provides a perfectly eerie atmosphere.
Sputnik will be released in theaters (if they're open) and will be available for digital rental and VOD on Friday, August 14.
