New “Boy Erased” Trailer Sheds Light on a True Story

Set in the recent past, it can be easy to think of Boy Erased as a story from long ago. Based on a true story, Boy Erased follows Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in small town America, as his parents enroll him in a gay conversation therapy program.

The new trailer gives us a peek at the players in Jared’s life, from his strict father (Russell Crowe) and his confused mother (Nicole Kidman) to the tough and unforgiving leader of the program (director and writer Joel Edgerton) to the boys he meets facing the same challenges (Xavier Dolan, Troye Sivan).

Based on the book, Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family by Gerrard Conley, the film looks to explore those same themes. And the trailer, at the end, reminds us that conversion therapy is not something that only happened in the past, it’s happening today all over the country as well. It’s a powerful message for a film ready to tackle a difficult subject. Watch the trailer below and see it in select theaters beginning November 2.
