Review: The Rite

Score:B

Director:Mikael Håfström

Cast:Anthony Hopkins, Colin O'Donoghue, Alice Brag, Ciarán Hinds

Running Time:112.00

Rated:PG-13

I have always been a big Anthony Hopkins fan. The man is simply a great actor, and his performance in The Rite exacerbates this widely known fact.  While the film will appear scary to some, it is better classified as an extremely entertaining drama/thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

Inspired by true events, The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak, who is reluctantly attending exorcism school at the Vatican.  While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas, who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.  The film is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the devil's reach to even the holiest of places on the Earth.

Anthony Hopkin's acting is nothing less than amazing.  His performance reminds me of those in his earlier films, where he was simply mezmerizing in every scene.  Add in the strong work of newcomer Colin O'Donoghue, and the film features the ultimate one-two-punch that gives it just the kick it needs to bring Michael Kovak's story to life.

Set in Rome and shot in Romania, The Rite isn't lacking for moody architecture, and director Mikael HÃ¥fström (known for his work with the adaptation of Stephen King's 1408) knows how to sustain an atmosphere to match the devil-minded decrees of old men in robes. The drama between Father Lucas and Michael is quite intense at times which only increases the story's level of interest and intrigue.

The one thing that could have made this movie better would have been a much needed R-rating.  Like many movies these days, it seems that studios have sacrificed content for greed and settled on the more marketable PG-13 rating.

Overall, I feel that The Rite shows how one of the greatest actors of our time (Hopkins) can really elevate a story. The film is intense, thought- provoking, and entertaining throughout. A great story mixed with superb acting definitely puts this one in high standing for the beginning of 2011.  If you love thrillers, the ticket price is well worth this fun movie experience.
