Review: Good Ol’ Freda

Score:B-

Director:Ryan White

Cast:Freda Kelly

Running Time:86.00

If you want the dirt on someone, don't talk to the person, talk to their secretary. Good Ol' Freda is a documentary all about Freda Kelly, The Beatles' secretary. Though sadly, there isn't a whole lot of information given here that can't be found from other sources. And as often as her point of view is interesting because it offers a different perspective on the career and history of the famed band, it's just as frequently frustrating to hear her speak of things and know that she's holding back. It's most obviously when she tiptoes around personal issues, often playing coy to romantic dalliances with members of the band.

She's comparatively open about the public history of the band and will retell some stories about behind-the-scenes moments, yet she remains so quiet about other private moments "“ even her own private life is still quite mysterious. That's not to say that she's not interesting as an interviewee "“ she's actually pretty approachable and she has a really unique perspective because she started as a Beatles fan before she became one of their employees. But as far as subject matter for the documentary is concerned, it's a little hit or miss.

It's fairly clear to me that Good Ol' Freda would be best suited for people who are pretty interested in The Beatles. Casual fans will likely get bored pretty quickly since this is not a tell-all by any means.  That being said, it is still an interesting documentary.
