Fox Releases First Trailer for “Assassins Creed” Adaptation

Ubisoft’s hit game franchise Assassin’s Creed is finally making its way to the big screen, reuniting stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard with their Macbeth director Justin Kurzel in one of 2016’s most anticipated films.

Though movies based on games haven’t had great success in their big screen transition, the initial announcement sent both gamers and geeks into hysteria a few years back. And with the recent resurgence of successful comic book adaptations, one can only hope that the creative achievements in that adaptation will transcend to the gaming medium.

Assassin’s Creed follows Callum Lynch, a recently deceased man who is entered into an elite program that allows him to travel back in time, exploring the memories of his own lineage. It is through this that he gains the skills of a Master Assassin, discovering that he is a descendent of a secret Assassins society.

Based on what we have seen thus far with the recent release of the first trailer, the film appears to be visually stellar. The story is an intriguing one that blends past and present as our protagonist attempts to better understand his history. If done properly, this film could be the beginning of a long (and lucrative) franchise.

Joining Fassbender and Cotillard is Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael Kenneth Williams. Though we will likely get more trailers over the coming months, fans will have to wait until December 21 for the film to hit theaters.
