“2 Broke Girls” Episode Recap: Pilot – Cupcakes & Ketchup

If you are like me, you already have your favorite new shows of the season picked out before they even premiere. And if you are like me the new CBS comedy '2 Broke Girls' was already considered one of my ultimate favorites, even before its premiere last night.  (I guess I'm a sucker for girls in mustard yellow.) But whether you've were excited to see the premiere or just couldn't find the remote after witnessing Ashton Kutcher's debut on 'Two and a Half Men', I'm sure you're already anxious to see more of these two broke girls.

The episode started off with a feisty speech from Max (played brilliantly by Kat Dennings) where she puts two customers in their place after being snapped at for her attention. Within the first two minutes of the show I was already in love with our leading lady as she brings a sassy, witty, and headstrong (again it could be the mustard yellow) woman to the forefront.

Then enter Caroline, a New york socialite who has just lost all of her money due to her father's business scandal. Caroline (played by relative newcomer Beth Behrs) is a perky little things who lied about her table waiting experience to land the much needed job. Her inexperience shows early on when she is asked to 'marry' the ketchup, something any real waiter would know how to do.

Max reluctantly takes Caroline under her wing and trains her on the basics of table service (all with a witty, sarcastic personality of course).  After discovering Caroline asleep on the subway Max takes her to her apartment. This, of course, comes after she tases her with her pink taser.

Things eventually get quite heartfelt when Caroline gets hit on by Max's live-in boyfriend who is living off the struggling waitress while 'pursuing' his music career. She shoots him down and tells Max that she deserves better. Max doesn't believe the cute little lying blonde but then finds him cheating on her with some tambourine floozy. After this, there is a sense of female comradery and you do really start to root for the unlikely duo.

The episode ends with Caroline moving in with Max and the pair deciding to work together to start their own cupcake shop.  Most of it is Caroline's idea but we are introduced to the point of the show during the final seconds where we learn that the duo currently has just over $300.  Their goal: $250,000.  I guess you've got to start somewhere.

Best lines of the night:

- "Do you know Paris Hilton?" "She's like 100"

- "I didn't think that would hurt, it's pink." "Well, It didn't feel pink." (after Caroline tases Max)

- "It looks like a really great place to relax and do crack." "It is." (referring to Max's backyard)

- "You're pathetic, and that's coming from someone who is homeless and wearing white after labor day" (Caroline after she shoots down Max's boyfriend)

- "I don't know what those things are called, but they make smart girls stupid" (referring to the stomach muscles on men)

What do you think readers? Are you excited for these girls to get closer?  What was your favorite line of the night?  And do you think the show has what it takes to see the girls reach their cupcake shop goal?  Comment below.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
