Author(s):
“From 1984 to 1994, a perfect storm of people and circumstances changed the face of animation forever.” Those are the first words we get to see as Don Hahn’s Waking Sleeping Beauty takes to the screen, and over the next 86 minutes, he shows just how true that statement is.

Youth in Revolt

B+
Director:
Miguel Arteta
Cast:
Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Zach Galifianakis
Running Time:
90
Rated:

Author(s):
Ever since Superbad, I have always looked forward to the next Michael Cera film. While he tends to play the same awkward yet funny leading male role, he always manages to steal your heart and deliver such simple lines that will have you chuckling long after the scene has changed. Needless to say, Youth in Revolt is no exception. From the cast, crazy storyline, and the adorable Michael Cera, this movie is a definite must-see.

Author(s):
In a world where Pixar reigns supreme, other 'wannabe' studios rarely merit a mention in terms of their universal appeal in animation. Sony penetrated the market a bit earlier in the year with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and while they looked to have the receipt for success with Planet 51, after watching the film, I sit here in amazement at the fact that it was ever even made.

Robert Zemeckis

Running Time:
96
Rated:

Author(s):
It seems that for every positive aspect of Robert Zemeckis’ retelling of the beloved Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, there was a countering negative that pulled this reviewer out of the movie.

Coraline

score:
A-
Director:
Henry Selick
Cast:
Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Robert Bailey Jr.
Running Time:
100

Author(s):
After almost 16 years away from the spotlight, Henry Selick, the man behind the fun and imaginative Nightmare Before Christmas, is back doing what he does best - making movies. Getting help from the likes of Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher, Selick one-ups his previous work, creating a world unlike any other in Focus Features' Coraline.

Over the last several years, films like Shrek, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles have given animation a new look and feel. However, with the new and improved style come higher expectations as studios stretch their imagination and resources to produce the next big hit. And while Dreamworks and Pixar continue to produce adequate films, other studios have quickly fallen behind. A prime example is Igor, a family-targeted film that struggles to find its audience as it mixes a mature story with kid's humor, repulsing both groups in the process.
