Straddling the line between political thriller and intense character study, Zal Batmanglij's The East is a powerful story that never loses focus of its end goal.  And while the film will occasionally show its budget, Batmanglij uses his stars to distract from the shortfalls, allowing them to fill the screen and sell their story as they chug along in an unorthodox David v. Goliath battle.

At this point, Christopher Nolan can officially be called a genius. Over the last decade his films have consistently been both financially lucrative and genre defining. One could even mount a solid case for calling Nolan one of the greatest directors of our time. Inception is perhaps the best evidence for such an assertion. The talented cast, mind-blowing story, and stunning visuals all support the basic underpinnings of the plot: that it is possible to willfully enter the dreams of others and manipulate their subconscious.

Although Smart People is a smart, well acted and an overall good film, I must say that I entered the theatre with high expectations – expectations, unfortunately not met.
