| Running Time: 122 minutes |
The Plot: Many years ago, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts formed a small little band known as the Rolling Stones. Now, a few decades later, the band has blown to an astronomical size, becoming one of the hardest concert tickets to obtain. However, Martin Scorsese has made that task a little easier for everyone, compiling backstage footage, vintage interview material and a sold out concert show into one single musical event that is sure to be loved and appreciated by many. |

The Movie: While seeing the Rolling Stones live would be an amazing experience, seeing them on the big screen is slightly less thrilling. For starters, it is almost the same as seeing a series of music videos on MTV or wherever they are shown these days. Not to mention that seeing the same thing over and over again, but with different songs, is bound to grow old at some point.
Which brings me to the film's running time of just over two hours, a major violation for any concert film. While many one act concerts keep the running time to just less than two hours, this film decided to go over that and suffers drastically because of it.
However, the great thing about owning a copy of the concert is that you can skip through the parts that you don't want to see and only watch the songs that you do. Additionally, the sound is really enhanced with the Blu-Ray upgrade, allowing you to experience the movie as if you really were at a sold-out show. And the guest appearances by Christina Aguilera, Buddy Guy and Jack White III didn't disappoint either. Because of this, the film isn't nearly as dreadful now as it was on the big screen, making a surprise improvement during its outlet transformation. |

The Extras: Supplemental Featurette (15:09): Providing more behind-the-scenes footage that didn't make it into the film, this fifteen minute segment contains nothing show-stopping and therefore can be skipped over with no feeling of regret.
Bonus Songs (16:44): This section allows you to watch four additional songs from the filmed concert that never made it into the final film. The songs include 'Undercover of the Night,' 'Paint it Black,' 'Little T & A' and 'I'm Free.' If you like any of these songs then you should definitely check it out. If you don't, just watch the film.

The Verdict: While the film is an obvious tribute to one of the greatest bands to ever take the stage, Shine a Light is unable to truly grasp the excellence that exists within the minds and voices of Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie. However, with the amazing audio and visuals resulting from the Blu-Ray version of the film, this disc is a must own for any Rolling Stones fan. Unfortunately, if you are like me, and neutral to the band and their music, then the disc is an easy pass. |
