The Movie: The second of four Jack Ryan films, Patriot Games is the first to star Hollywood powerhouse, Harrison Ford. Taking over the reins from Alex Baldwin who starred in Hunt for Red October, Ford had his work cut out for him. Thankfully, the seasoned veteran delivered on all marks, one upping his predecessor and creating a film that will easily outlast the test of time.
Though it started out a little slow, the movie quickly became a constant source of action as we get to see Ryan in true form. From his life saving leap in front of Buckingham Palace to the high-speed boat chase that closes out the film, everything seemed to fall into place as the audience was taken on a fast-paced thrill ride that never seemed to let up until the credits began to roll.
While Ford was impeccable as the film's leading force, the work of both Sean Bean and James Fox helped to solidify the film and create a multi-force attack. Serving as the film's major villains, both stars were able to use their intensity to create an adrenaline rush for the audience. From their clever lines to energetic action sequences, you just never knew what to expect from this film.
And then there was the story. Taken from Tom Clancy's best-selling novel, the film had a strong premise from the beginning. However, through a series of rewrites, the premise materialized perfectly as the scene changes were fluid, coming together with the actors and creating an irresistible action film that is a must watch for any true film fanatic. |

The Extras: Patriot Games: Up Close (25:14): While the film's premise was pre-set, the transition from book to film was anything but easy. 'Up Close' dives into the trials and tribulations that occurred through both the planning and filming of the movie. Though a little long, the segment was extremely interesting to watch. |
|
The Verdict: Though the film was originally released in 1992, Harrison Ford gives a stellar performance as the world-renowned Jack Ryan. As a result, Patriot Games is able to conquer the test of time and enter a new stage on Blu-Ray. Sure the bonus features are slim, but the lone one is brilliantly done, making this disc a solid upgrade into the new world of HD. |
