The Plot: For years Nim and her father have lived on a remote tropical island studying the wonders of nature. But when her father gets lost at sea during a heavy story, Nim has no one to turn to but her favorite adventure author, Alex Rover. However, there is a secret about the wonderful Ms. Rover, she can't stand the outdoors – literally. In fact, she hasn't ventured out of her apartment in years as she corresponds with everyone over the phone or through the wonders of the internet. But when her biggest fan begins to tell of her problem, Alex can't help but reach out for some help. Together, the two ladies must join forces as they search for Nim's father and a new beginning. |

The Movie: Told through a child's point of view, Nim's Island was never meant for someone like me. However, I must admit that it wasn't all that bad. Riding an interesting and uniquely done script and three outstanding lead performances, the film excelled far beyond my expectations and makes for a great watch.
Relying heavily on the work of its stars, Nim's Island is led by Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin. Though she is much better than this film, Breslin gives a phenomenal performance as the innocent and adventurous Nim. Using her clever timing and her soft approach, Breslin is able to bring her character to life as she outshines her co-stars Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler.
But that isn't to say their either veteran actor underperformed. In fact, if I had to say anything, I would say that they both delivered flawlessly. Using the roles in which they were given, each actor gives a stellar performance. It is just that Breslin is so good that you cannot help but fall in love with her and her childish ways – a feat that is near impossible for either Foster or Butler to accomplish.
Additionally, the camera was able to capture the visual spectacles that surround the tropical island. Through these, every audience member is able to see and appreciate the world of nature and the fun and excitement that the outdoors and a little bit of imagination can provide.
However, I unfortunately can't say the same thing for the film's script. Though the premise was extremely interesting and the story was fun, the script really failed in the form of its dialogue. Plagued with cheesy lines and over-the-top antics, the film loses its older audiences through this mishap, luckily keeping the younger ones in tow. |

The Extras: Adventure Commentary with Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster: While many commentaries feature the directors and/or writers of the film, Nim's Island delights us with the thoughts and interpretations of the film's leading ladies, Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster. Though interesting, this film is simply one that requires no additional information.
Deleted Scenes (15:29): While Nim shares the island with her animal friends, it wasn't always like that. In fact, Nim originally got the joy of having a number of imaginary friends to fill her time. From Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer to Alice and Long John Silver, Nim allowed the characters from her favorite stories to come alive. Unfortunately, that part of the film was scratched, but now we get to see the cleverly done deleted scenes.
Nim's Friends (6:17): This feature dives into Nim's 'animal' friends, examining their particular role in the film and their relationship with Abigail Breslin.
Abigail's Journey (6:42): This segment features interviews with the cast and crew as it reveals how Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin got attached to the project as well as the amount of work that her role required. |

The Verdict: Even though the film registered a mediocre score with me at theaters, I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it during my second viewing. Focusing on the imagination and determination of a young girl, Nim's Island impresses with its unique story and approach as well as its stellar cast. Combine that with a list of impressive bonus features and this upgraded Blu-Ray disc is fun for the whole family! |
