| Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay: Unrated (2008) |
| Director: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg |
| Cast: John Cho, Kal Penn, Rob Cordory, Roger Bart, Neil Patrick Harris |
| Running Time: 107 minutes |
The Plot: When Harold and Kumar board a plane for Amsterdam, you know that things are not going to go according to plan. Mistaken for terrorist, the two potheads are sent to Guantanamo Bay where they experience a different breed of criminals. But after a quick escape, the men embark on an unforgettable journey back home; one that consists of a fierce FBI agent, a clan of KKK members and a young guy by the name of Neil Patrick Harris. |

The Movie: Though I am embarrassed, I must admit that the beginning of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay was perfect. Carrying a pleasant pace, the film contained an even balance of slapstick and gag humor that even I couldn't complain. But then, out of nowhere, the film took a sudden sharp turn south.
As the film progressed, the acting became bland and robotic, the plot became absurdly ridiculous and most unfortunately, the jokes went from funny to awkwardly disturbing. Thrown together, the film reached a deadly halt and couldn't end fast enough to save itself.
The only potential 'saving' grace moment that sadly didn't save the film at all, was the cameo appearance by the infamous Neil Patrick Harris. Showing up about halfway through the film, Harris lights up the screen as he provides a slight diversion from the otherwise pitiful film and plays his supporting role to pin-point perfection. Demanding the audience's attention as he steals every scene he is in, NPH makes the film better because, though I am not sure if that is even a compliment.
Unfortunately that was it for the last half of the film. Sure the jokes were sometimes funny, but the film took everything too far, stretching it to its limits and making every joke disturbingly bad. |

The Extras: Dude, Change the Movie!: This feature allows you to change the journey that Harold and Kumar take on their way to Hewitt, Texas. Easily one of the best special features to date.
The World of Harold and Kumar (21:35): 'The World of Harold and Kumar' features interviews with the cast and crew about how the world around the two potheads was created. From the writers to the guys themselves, everyone has a story that must be told.
Deleted Scenes (18:50): With a mountain of originally deleted material, there was bound to be some good stuff hiding deep within the heap of stupid and tiresome jokes. Fortunately for fans, there was a fair share of clips that could have, and should have been included in the final cut of the picture. Those clips and many other miserable ones can be seen here.
Extras (7:02): After all of the deleted scenes, these 'extra' scenes go a little overboard. So watch the deleted scenes, skip this one.
Bush PSA (1:53): A truly classic promotional ad that showcases the Bush impersonator from the film. Great if you are looking for a heartless laugh. |

The Verdict: While it was a great idea that somehow turned sour about halfway through, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay has actually proven itself to me on Blu-Ray. Equipped with some stellar special features and a great option to change the film, I hate to admit it, but I actually consider this disc a well thought out purchase decision. |
