| Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition (2008) |
| Director: Matthew Diamond |
| Cast: Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas, Meaghan Jette Martin, Maria Canals Barrera, Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas |
The Plot: Mitchie has always dreamed of going to Camp Rock, the hottest, most intense camp for the arts. However, when her time finally comes to leave, the excited young-girl is taken aback by the attitudes of the other campers. However, in a struggle to fit in, the insecure Mitchie befriends the camp's biggest ego in Tess Tyler. But when Mitchie finally realizes what she has gotten herself into, it will take a lot more than her voice to get her out as she battles with her inner acceptance and discovers the true meaning of individuality. |

The Movie: Origionally airing on the Disney Channel, Camp Rock takes a page out of the formula that helped propel 'Hannah Montana' and 'High School Musical' to pop-cultural phenomenon status. Carrying catchy tunes, a fresh-faced cast and the daunting dilemmas of high school, the film comes across as innocent fun, and will have the whole family singing along in no time.
As the film starts out, we are introduced to Mitchie Torres, played by newcomer Demi Lovato. Though the initial invitation to go to Camp Rock isn't clear, we know that the teen will ultimately get her wish, since that is the basis of the film in the first place. But it isn't this invitation that makes the film, but rather the events that occur after she arrives as the prestigious camp.
Completely shocked by the attitude and personalities of the 'cool' kids at camp, Mitchie lies through her teeth in order to fit in with the 'it' crowd. Unfortunately, like it always does, the lie comes back to haunt her. Torn between doing what is right and wrong, Mitchie is forced to make her own decisions, leaving no one to blame when things go sour. Sound familiar, believe me, it is.
Regardless, I cannot deny the ridiculous addiction that this film brings out in me. Thrown off by the catchy tunes and the classic speed bumps, Camp Rock fits the stereotypical film perfectly, but it is somehow better. I am not really sure how, all I know is that it is! |

The Extras: Music Videos (3:51): Though there were numerous songs in the film, this section highlights two of them, 'Start the Party' and 'We Rock.' Though catchy, the tracks are a little too short for my liking.
Sing Along with the Movie: This feature allows you to play the songs from the film, but now the words appear at the bottom for you to sing along to. Truly brilliant for someone who wants to learn and sing.
Camp Rock Karaoke: While some will enjoy singing with the cast, others will want to sing all alone. With this bonus features, you can do just that!
Camp Rock Set Tour (6:33): Revealing the numerous sets for the film as well as the trailers for some of the cast members, this feature is somewhat pointless and a major bore compared to what else is offered.
Camp Memories (5:49): All we get here are a series of photographs and short video clips that were taken while the cast was on-set. A major disappointment.
Hasta La Vista: From Rehearsals to Final Jam (4:54): This feature shows the dancing rehearsals that the cast went through to play their particular part. It also showed just how much the choreography changed during the filming. Interesting, if you like that sort of thing. |

The Verdict: Though extremely stereotypical and generic, Camp Rock shocked me as I found it to be both enjoyable and addicting. From newcomer Demi Lovato to the combined efforts of the Jonas Brothers, the film was decently acted and extremely entertaining as I found myself embarrassed but grateful that I got to see it. Additionally, the Blu-Ray disc bumps up the audio quality, creating for an even better soundtrack as it features a run of stellar bonus features, making it an ideal film for any music fan! |
