I won't even pretend to know a thing about dancing - especially that of ballet. It was just never my thing. I approached Bess Kargman's festival winner First Position with some major hesitation, seeing as how it is a documentary that follows six youth dancers as they strive to earn awards and scholarships at the Young America Grand Prix.
It has been nearly thirteen years since writer/director Whit Stillman last ventured behind the camera. But alas the time has come and he is back with his newest offering, Damsels in Distress. Featuring an amazing cast and a killer soundtrack, Stillman sat down with us to discuss his long hiatus, finding his leading star, and just what is behind all the buzz for Sambola - the new international dance craze!
Telling the story of three slightly superficial college girls that attend a predominately male university and have a mistaken grip on reality, Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress definitely has its moments. But the story itself lacks much pizzaz or purpose, leaving me unsatisfied and underwhelmed as I left the theater.
Utilizing the new 'craze' of the handheld camera, Chronicle crafts a fun and intense story that sees three high school students inherit more power than anyone thought imaginable. But with power comes responsibility, and these guys are about to find out just how dangerous they can become - and you can see too when the film hits stores on May 15th.
