Danielle Bartz
After rowing through four years at the University of Texas and spending a year in the Dominican Republic preparing to save the world, my friend (and founder) Stephen called me and asked me for a favor and edit 3 movie reviews that he needed to post on his website. Over a year later, I'm his only editor, and he somehow managed to recruit my writing skills as well. I have no complaints as I love both theatre and film, and I see more movies now than ever before. I have a secret love for documentaries that earned me a press pass to SXSW 2010, and I'll never look back. I have opinions about everything, but I can always argue the other side, so when it comes to the films I review, I'm better off assigned to those I've never heard of and just walking out with a feeling. I cannot, not watch horror films, despite the fact that so many are terrible, and I love movies that make you really think. The movies I can watch over and over until I wear the discs out are the "good v. evil" epics, like LOTR, X-Men, and of course -my favorite- Harry Potter. Confession: I have never seen the original Star Wars (I know, I know...put your tomatoes away!), and I need to see more classics. Favorite Oldies: Gone With the Wind, Steel Magnolias, and A League of Their Own. I will write a best-seller, be a comedian, and be friends with Ellen Degeneres one day.     Sony Pictures' remake of 21 Jump Street screened at the recent SXSW Film Festival.  We were fortunate to get a spot on the interview line to welcome the film's stars, including Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, and Channing Tatum, as they reveal what drew them to the project and what it was like working with frontman Jonah Hill.

  • Electrick Children (SXSW 2012)

    Fifteen-year old Rachel lives in a Fundamentalist Mormon community in Utah.  A few months after discovering a rock 'n' roll cassette tape and listening to forbidden music she had never heard before, Rachel finds herself pregnant. While her parents immediately arrange a marriage, Rachel is convinced it was an immaculate conception not a sin, and she runs away to Las Vegas to find the man on the cassette and answers about her pregnancy.

  • See Girl Run (SXSW 2012)

    As See Girl Run started, it had a documentary feeling to it, which pleasantly misdirected and intrigued me. I applaud both director Nate Meyer and the entire cast for shaping a realistic story that everyone can relate to. Some part of me identified with each character involved, and I found myself expecting our protagonist Emmie to handle her “what if” one way, yet understanding that others would feel totally different.

  • Los Chidos (SXSW 2012)

    The Gonzales family lives in Mexico and lazily runs a tire shop when they can force themselves to get off the couch and stop eating their mother’s special tacos. After a strange, white American stumbles into their life with a broken car, and a lot of money, they reluctantly take him in and take advantage of him while he gets in over his head falling for their neighbor who’s in an abusive new marriage.

  • Eating Alabama (SXSW 2012)

    As filmmaker Andrew Grace and his wife decide to return to their one-time home of Alabama, they also decide to return to their families’ ancestral roots of farming. Vowing to eat locally and seasonally for an entire year, they soon discover just how much the entire food system in our society has changed.

    Crystal and her boyfriend Leo are on a road trip through the hot humid Florida Everglades, but they seem hurried and stressed instead of relaxed and happy. Throughout the trip, the audience is slowly let in on the dark details of what the drive is about, as well as what lies ahead.

    King Kelly follows one crazy day in the life of fame-seeking teen Kelly who strips online in hopes of making a name for herself and posts videos of her every move online. After her ex steals her car, carrying narcotics she must deliver by a deadline, Kelly and her friend Jordan must recruit her biggest online fan to go on an all night chase involving drugs, sex, and violence to get her car back…all filmed on her iPhone camera.

  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (Movie Reviews)

    Twihards everywhere will “oooh” and “ahhh” as Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) get married and head off to their overly built up honeymoon, where they have every intention of participating in human/vampire sex.

    Before meeting up with Shrek and Co, the super smooth, sword-fighting pussy cat had a dramatic story of his own. Puss in Boots 3D allows us to follow Puss’ story as he unites with the sexy and strong Kitty Softpaws, Humpty Dumpty, and fights to save his hometown.
