SXSW Review: Modus Anomali

Running Time:87.00

Being on vacation at a cabin in the middle of the woods seems like pure tranquility to me.  But when a set of events leads to a haunting plea for one's life, things tend to get a bit less enjoyable for all unexpected parties.

Joko Anwar's Modus Anomali gives viewers a fun and exciting puzzle to solve as they witness a man desperately search his surroundings in an attempt to put together the pieces of exactly what has just happened to him and his family.  And while the story seems a bit old-fashioned, I assure you that the twist will leave you with a dumbfound expression as you begin to put the events together in a unique mind puzzle of your own.

It takes a lot to spurn some creativity into the rather generic horror genre, but Anwar has done just that.  Giving the audience a simple story filled with what can originally be perceived as plot inconsistencies, Anwar reverts back and answers every misstep during the film's final ten minutes.

A small cast and a single set gives the film a claustrophobic feel, enhancing the energy as our leading man anxiously searches the woods for an escape.  When a new family ventures into a nearby cabin, you can't help but wonder if they are somehow connected to the strange events.

I would never dream of unveiling anything close to the final reveal.  Just know that it comes from left field, and while I don't always love absurd twists, Modus Anomali did it right.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
