I Melt With You
A yearly reunion with four college friends. A weekend of sex, alcohol, and drugs is sure to bring the relief that Richard, Ron, Jonathan, and Tim need from their daily lives to rejuvenate them for another year of madness. But as the weekend progresses and guys begin to enter an unexpected place, they each must come face to face with the decisions they have allowed to dictate their life.
Featuring a small, highly praised cast and a stellar soundtrack, Mark Pellington's I Melt With You is a dark and maddening journey to the pit of your inner conscious. Hitting too close to home for many, the film dives in head first, wearing its indie badge with honor as it is sure to damper the mood of all who venture to watch.
Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Rob Lowe, and Christian McKay do a fascinating job depicting four college friends who are sent down a spiraling staircase of destruction. But in all honesty, their characters are much more than what meets the eyes.
The film itself can be split up in two very distinct halves. The first is a beautiful, almost serene look at four men who are letting loose on a weekend that is meant to throw caution to the wind. The second half is the horrific realization that every decision comes with a consequence.
The end verdict is hard to fully muster. While the film is pulsating and unique adventure, its dark tone is a bit hard to judge. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, angry by the complexity of it all. But the more I think about it, maybe life really isn't that simple.
The Blu-Ray disc features a slew of bonus features, including a set of audio commentaries, a behind the scenes feature, three trailers, and an interview with director Mark Pellington. I'm not sure if the disc is a worthy purchase, as I can't truly see myself ever venturing into this dark abyss again. But I Melt With You is definitely one worth checking out—when you're ready!
