When I first heard of Decoding Deepak, I was intrigued to see what story director Gotham Chopra would tell about his father. Deepak Chopra is an inspirational leader to many people, but his personal life has been kept out of the public eye for years. This film sheds some light on the man himself, giving us a true glimpse inside the life of someone who inspirers many.
Decoding Deepak is a first hand account as filmed by Deepak's son Gotham Chopra. Gotham spends a year following his father, officially separating the man from the myth with a raw honesty that only a son can provide. What starts as a decoding of the spiritual leader quickly becomes an examination of himself, and possibly an allegory of a world trying to make sense of itself.
What I found interesting about this film is Gotham’s take on what his father teaches. There is a since of skepticism here that adds a nice layer to the overall story. And while the film is targeted to those who are familiar with Deepak's teachings, the documentary's unique approach makes it an entertaining watch that should appeal to those outside of his immediate fan base.
